Direct cable from USB-UIRT out to STB in possible?

Since the USB-UIRT can drive two additional IR units, and some STB's have an external IR input, can a cable directly from the USB-UIRT to the STB work? Really, just removing the emitter and detector from the middle. Wondering if anybody has tried this.
