Is the rear output current limited, means can I connect a LED or IR LED directly or is an additional resistor necessary?

I have made some measures:
I connected a red LED and an IR LED without a serial resistor. (Only a 1 Ohm type for the current measurment). The LED current was in both cases limited to appr. 30mA. So there is no need to build in a serial resistor to the LED and it' easy to build an external IR transmitter.
