Cannot Learn Codes for an old Jerrold Box

Postby sixdoubleo » Wed Dec 31, 2003 3:43 am

I have an old Jerrold Analog Cable box and a USB-UIRT. It's one of those wood-grain metal boxes. I am unable to learn any of the buttons on the remote with the USB-UIRT. I am able to take my Sony Universal remote (RM-V402) and key in the code for the Jarrold and the remote works fine. But the USB-UIRT wont learn from that remote either. When I point either remote at the USB-UIRT I get no light whatsoever. I can learn other remotes just fine.

I have the 56K version if that matters. I am flashed to the latest BIOS on the UIRT unit.

Thanks!

First thing to try is to see if we can get an 'IR debug' capture of the remote. To do this, choose 'IR Debug' instead of 'Learn' in the USB-UIRT dialog, and then press and hold a button on the remote while holding it close (approx 3 inches) and aimed just to the left of the RED LED, and see if you can get the progress bar to climb and finish.

Arrg...hotmail had you flagged as junk mail. OK, here is the IR Debug from pressing "0".

OK, this might be a firmware issue. Please flash your USB-UIRT to the latest firmware version and retry the IR Debug. To do this, get the firmware and updater from www.usbuirt.com/latestFirmware.zip

Jon,

I updated the firmware, but no dice. The unit doesn't flash when I press buttons. My uuirtdrv.dll is version 2.6.6.0. I uninstalled and resintalled the USB-UIRT just in case. Still no luck.

I DID notice that with Girder I can learn the Volume Up and Down buttons. But I can't learn the digits or the channel up and down. FYI, girder reports the Volume up as "1F008A5401D0" and the Volume down as "1F008A5415D0". Does that help any???

OK,

Watch this topic -- I'll get back to you in a little while -- your remote uses DC (no modulation) and the learn/import process currently doesn't support that -- but it *will*!

Jon,

Even though the USB-UIRT cannot LEARN this remote, I am assuming that it can TRANSMIT the codes if it already knew them....correct?

Is there somewhere I can go to find out what the codes are for this cable box and then manually input them? I am using SageTV so all it needs to know are the codes for 0-9 so it can change channels. If I'm not mistaken, Sage has an IR properties file which tells the USB-UIRT what codes to transmit. That being the case, should I be able to query some online codes database to get some Jerrold codes to try?

Yes, this is more or less true. However, the code modification to handle DC pronto codes is not in place for supporting plugins like the Sage one. I will need to work on it...

So the codes that I see in a SageTV remote file are NOT pronto codes?

Actually they *are* pronto codes. However, if you look at a DC pronto code, a special bit is set in the code which signifies DC. The current USB-UIRT driver can handle this in some cases. However, most Pronto codesets you'll find with DC codes will have been learned by a Pronto device which tends to use a code frequency (which is still used as a timebase) of >300KHz. The driver needs to be modified to handle such codes.

Jon - For what it's worth I also seem to be having the same problems with a Jerrold cable box. Mine is model numbe 5508. The USB-UIRT will give a couple of flashes when I first press the button on the remote but nothing more if I hold the button down.

If this helps, here's the IR Debug from pressing "0" on my remote (I have to press it repeatedly to fill up the Learn Progress status bar):

Do you have any status update on the code modification to handle the DC pronto codes?
