Strangeness with my remote(s) hitting USB-UIRT & SageTV

Re-purposing my old DVD remote, I point it right at the pc, the red light comes on indicating receipt of signal, and yet nothing. However, I point it about 6 feet below the USB-UIRT, and it works fine. [i trained SageTV to recognize the old remote buttons].
FWIW, I tried my old AT&T digital cable remote, half the time it wasn't picking it up, 30% of the time it would work, 20% of the time my system would hang.
Just got Dish and the Samsung SIR-300 - repurposed the vcr play/pause/skip buttons on that but didn't delete the old DVD remote commands in Sage. Couldn't get that one to work at all, even though that insipid red USB-UIRT light kept flashing letting me know it got my signal.
All I want to do is skip ahead while watching SageTV recorded programs.
