Generic USB IR Receiver

Hiya, I have a generic USB IR Receiver that I was hoping to use as a receiver for my TV remote, to control apps such as winamp. Am I going about this all the wrong way? I thought that the USB-UIRT plugin for girder would allow me to do this?

Please help, I am totally lost at the moment.

The USB-UIRT plugin *only* works with the USB-UIRT hardware.
