Learning a perculiar code - 1 chance only

Postby xavk » Wed Jan 26, 2005 10:56 pm

Guys,

Are any of you able to offer me some advise?

I have purchased a Panasonic DVD player that can be made region free using a custom remote similar to the one seen here:

http://www.multi-region.co.uk/self_service.php

As I am keen to keep my player current, I will be looking to upgrade the firmware etc as and when these become available. The issue is that the firmwares may on occasion reset the region settings. As the remote is a one time only use device, I could be forced to buy a new one each time I upgrade the firmware.

Discussions with a Panasonic service centre lead me to believe that the codes transmitted are "unusual" in that the strings are longer than any standard learning remote could capture and that timings are also an issue.

Can anyone advise of a program that could be used to learn and replay the relevant code given that I can play the code only once and be able to replicate it in future? I envisage doing this with my USB UIRT sitting next to the DVD IR port so both can receive simultaneously.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

xavk,

I am not too optimistic on this...

IF you had one of these remotes to experiment with, a utility could likely be developed to record the appropriate IR stream coming from the remote. However, it sounds like once you start having the remote send these special codes, you're 'committed' to finishing the procedure.

You are right, once you press go, it will play the code once and then never again (v Mission Impossible!).

Are you saying there is no utility out there that will record an IR stream with advanced information (ie timing info)? I guess I dont have to have something guaranteed to work - just a good shot would be nice, as I need to use the thing soon so I can watch my R1 DVDs anyway.
