help me with with SA 3250HD and lirc?

I have a Scientific Atlanta 3250HD cable box, and I'm fairly sure my UIRT is not one of the ones that can learn 56KHz signals. Am I correct that I should still be able to send signals to it?
I'm using lirc built with a recent patch to support the UIRT. I have not found an LIRC config that says it is specifically for the 3250, but I believe it uses the same remote as the 2000 and 8000. I've tried configs for both of those.
I had to add a "frequency 56000" line to the 2000 config to keep lirc from dying whe I tried to use it. The visible light on the UIRT flashes when I try to change the channel, but there is no response from the cable box at all.
I read that other people have had success by pointing the UIRT away from the cable box, and by putting masking tape over the front of it. Neither of these helped me.
If anyone has used the UIRT with this cable box, please tell me about it.
If you had success with this cable box using lirc, please send me the lirc config you used.
thanks,
