usb-uirt to keyboard mapping

I have a usb-uirt and I want to do something that I thought would be simple...but turns out it isn't. I want the computer to interpret a button press on my remote as a keyboard key. In other words...when I hit the 1 button on my remote, I want the computer to think the 1 key has been pressed. When I hit the 'enter' button on my remote I want the computer to think that the 'enter' key has been pressed...REGARDLESS of what software is currently on top. Is there any simple utility to do this? As far as I know...even Girder changes what key presses do, depending on what application is on top.

My remote rite now is just a regular IR, but thinking about buying one of them Niveus/Marmitek RF ones.

Most remotes that simulate keypresses do so by installing themselves as a HID (Human Interface Device) keyboard device. Then Windows handles the rest.

Since the USB-UIRT does not do this, it is up to an application to feed the keyboard buffer. Different apps handle this differently. I believe Girder lets you choose the method by which the keys are injected into the system.

EventGhost can also do this. You can assign keys globally or specific to the context you are working. If your Niveus/Marmitek is one of the many X10-like devices, it is also supported by EventGhost.

thanks for the replies. I can't buy the Marmitek because I can not find it in the USA (very unfortunate). I will now probably go with a firefly, and will look into eventghost. (i don't want to use girder if I don't have to) thakns for the ideas.

Yes, the Firefly should also work out of the box with EventGhost.
