Radiated intensity of IR transmitters?

Hi!
I want to experiment a bit with IR as it seems to be a very simple way of remote controlling indoor stuff (I have been using a digital radio module for this purpose before).
But I need to find out how powerful IR LED's I should use. I find LED's with a radiated intensity in the range 1 ... 500 mW/sr. I have nothing to compare with but 500 mW/sr sounds a lot (it sounds like it could damage ones eyes permanently). What would be normal power for an indoor remote control?
On the USB UIRT page it says about the IR transmitter that it consists of: "Two (2) built-in High-Power Emitters". What is the radiated intensity of those LED's and what kind of max range do they give?
I would be thankful if you (the designer) could share this info. Or better yet, give the manufacturer part number of those LED's so I could check the details myself.
