Is USB-UIRT right for me?

Here is what I am planning to do...please let me know if USB-UIRT would help.

I own a ReplayTV and use some programs to control it remotely over the internet. However, not all functions are supported through the remote software. I would like to get an IR transmitter device that I can hook up to my pc and be able to send a few commands out to my Replay while logged into my computer remotely.

It sounds as if USB-UIRT is the perfect solution for me, although I did see a thread on another forum mentioning the ReplayTV's use some special frequency, which is also listed on the USB-UIRT page as: "*56KHz IR Receiver Add-On Option*". Can anybody confirm if I need this?

The ordering page lists a "USB-UIRT w/additional 56KHz IR Sensor", but would I also need a transmitter that supports this?


One more quick thing...anybody know of a small program that will learn maybe one or two codes and allow me to click and transmit those codes? I don't think I need the full girder software since I'll only need one or two codes to transmit.

Hover,

For your situation you likely do not need the 56KHz option. This option only affects the USB-UIRT's ability to RECEIVE codes from a 56KHz remote (from across the room, etc.). It does not affect the ability to LEARN and TRANSMIT codes from various carrier frequencies.

One other quick question... Since it's only $5 more, would it hurt to get the upgraded 56khz version in case I ever do need it? Are there any drawbacks to using it for what I currently want to do?

No, there are no drawbacks -- the 56KHz version is the regular version PLUS an additional 56KHz sensor inside.
