USB-UIRT with LIRC and infrared repeaters, sensitivity issue

Postby bmccrary » Mon Apr 04, 2005 3:48 am

Hello,

I am not sure if this problem would be software or hardware related, but I'm having problems using the USB-UIRT to receive signals when they are coming off of a repater network. It seems the signals are quite different coming off of the repeaters than in front of the USB-UIRT directly, however both signals can control any device fine. I'm using a Niles wired repeater in case that matters. I've also had similiar problems learning satellite remotes, I have one that is a universal and one is OEM, and they appear quite different when learning, however the satellite happily takes a command from either. I am thinking this may be due to LIRC only suppoting "raw" mode, but am not sure. Anyone else having the same problems or been successful in making this work? I can learn the codes again from behind the repeater, but even that doesn'twork very well as I can get 10 different codes depending on how I aim the remote. The device I'm controlling always works well so I'm thinking the signal must have some integrity.

bmccrary,

Are you trying to 'learn' signals via the repeater network? If so, you probably will see problems. I am not familiar with the Lirc learning algorithm, but since repeater networks also pass along (and amplify) spurious IR noise, Lirc will likely see IR garbage before and after the real IR signal from your remote. Since your devices know what signals they're looking for, they'll still see the IR signals buried in IR noise just fine, but an IR learning algorithm will have trouble.

Thanks for the advice. I've tried learning the signals through the infrared repeatewr, and sometime it'll work, but only if I am about the same distance away from the repeater as I was when I learned the codes. They look quite different. Here's the code for one bytton when pointing it directly at the USB-UIRT:

2450 600 1100 600 1100 600
550 600 1100 600 1100 600
550 600 550 600 550 600
1100 600 550 600 1100 600
1100 600 1100 600 550 600
550 600 1100 600 550 600

Here's one in front of the repeater:

2200 750 1000 750 950 800
350 700 1000 750 950 750
400 700 400 750 350 800
900 800 350 750 950 700
950 800 900 800 300 750
350 750 950 750 400 750
400 700 950 750 400

Here's one further away from the repeater:

2250 850 900 850 850 850
300 800 900 900 800 850
250 850 250 850 250 800
900 800 300 850 850 850
800 850 600 50 100 900
300 850 300 850 850 850
300 850 300 800 850 850
300

It still doesn't work too often even with those 3 codes programmed in. I guess eventually I got get all 100 it seems likely to be able to recieve. :) You would think there would be a better way to learn the codes though!
