Learning/sending IRDA codes

I would like my USB-UIRT to control the Force digital satellite receiver, but I'm pretty sure it's running on the irda standard. Is there a way to teach the USB-UIRT this type of code, or is it impossible? I saw that the Red Rat had gotten that possibility through a firmware upgrade, is this in the works for the UIRT as well? This receiver is actually the only piece of controllable equipment in my house that I can't control from NetRemote now, and that sort of annoys me. I can control it with the PPC through PDAWin's TV Remote control, but it doesn't work on pass thorugh for NetRemote, and not over my IR extenders. So if it's going to be possible I'll have to move the USB-UIRT into the living room (which is no problem) and send the signals directly from them. I hope, I hope, I hope...

btw is it possible with the UIRT2? I have a couple of those, just waiting for my brother to get them working (one of them since March...).

First of all, I really doubt its using IRDA if they provide a standard remote to control it. IRDA has too short of a range. Anyway, can you give me more details of the receiver?

- Do you have a remote control for this receiver and have you tried to learn its codes?
- Do you know if there are pronto codes for it at remotecentral.com?
- Do you have make/model info you can post?

There is no effort underway to transmit IRDA-like signals currently, but there is no reason (I know of, anyway) this couldn't be achieved via a firmware update...

Actually several types of European digital satellite receivers use IRDA because they are ment to use keyboards, gamepads and stuff. Like the Pace systems that comes with Sky channel in the UK. So it's not unheard of.

I tried to learn the codes into the Girder plugin, but there was no reaction when pointing and clicking the remote button (even though it worked without a problem as soon as I used the same remote's setting for my TV (the remote that comes with the Force box has VHS and TV control as well)). So learning it through the UIRT is a no go.

There are no codes at Remotecentral, I have looked and tried the three CCFs I found there (for older models) but they did't do anything.

Force 1199s. If it helps, here's the code that I learned with PDAWin (that program works, but some of the buttons have a tendency to send double punches) for the number 1:

When I send it through NetRemote, the light blinks on the UIRT, and I get some signal out, but I have not yet managed to get it working. I even used about 30 meters of cable to put an external emitter from the UIRT jack right in front of the unit, but to no avail. It worked nicely with the same emitter and cable for the TV, the Denon receiver and the JVC DVD/VHS combo. So there's a signal there, just not the right signal. I really hope we can get somewhere on this, I would love to get this working. Then I can control everything in my house with NetRemote (well, maybe not my wife, to control her I would probably need a bullwhip or a baseball bat! ).

Sorry, I forgot to log in - I'm on another computer than the one I registered on yesterday. But it is me. Anyway, my two kids will be fully controllable when I get the Force up and running with NetRemote, as soon as I turn on the Disney Channel they sit down and shut up.

I tried to put the UIRT on the WLAN equipped notebook to see if it helped to have the unit and the Force receiver in the same room. I could still control the Denon and the rest of the stuff, but not the Force. Would it help if I sendt you the CCF with the Force codes? I could send that and the Denon codes, both are learned, both work (well, sort of) in PDAWin's TV Remote Control, but only the Denon works with the UIRT.

Oh, the Force is called D-Master 1199s, and on the backside of the remote it has a logo that says "designed with UEI technology", which seems to be related to the company that makes Nevo, Universal Electronics Inc. Very fishy... I sendt them this e-mail, so we'll see if they react:

I'll tell you the moment they get back to me, Jon! If they do, that is... I'm not too optimistic, I tried to E-mail Force about something different almost two months ago, and I haven't heard back from them yet...

Wow, I'm fully capabable of holding a thread hyperactive without any help!

Anyway, I finally got through to customer support here in Norway, and I was told that there are no RC5 codes for it, the remote is built by the people behind One4All, and the unit is very picky when it comes to remotes. But still I can control the thing from the other side of the living room with the original remote, even though it's quite picky as to the direction I point in, so why shouldn't it work with a learning thingie? Anyway, he told me that he had only been able to control it with a Marantz 9200 and the Pronto equivalent, so there is something weird there...

I tried to learn the code to the Girder plug-in again, and this time I moved the remote close to the USB-UIRT. When I was less than two inches from the front of it, and pointed the correct way, the learning indicator in the bottom started to move. It actually went up to about 80-85 % again and again...and again. It did not, however, go all the way, and it did not register the code as learnt. I also tried learning in RAW mode, whatever that is, but it did not help.

Have you tried importing the Pronto codes learned by PDAWin into Girder? I know you've tried them in NetRemote passthru, but just in case there's an issue there could you try importing one:

When importing, make sure to CHECK 'Import as Raw'

The Pronto codes would be useful to me if I could get hold of a PPC and PDAWin TV Remote software. I could then compare a single code's output on both PDAWin and the UIRT to see where the difference lies.

Another helpful thing would be for you to do an IR debug capture of the same button you posted a pronto code for. You can do this in Girder. Make sure to hold the remote close like you did while trying to learn. Also, I'd be interested in the carrier frequency being reported when you try to learn.

I have no idea what that means. I tried to copy the stuff through learn - import, but got an error mesage: "Pronto HEX data had to be for a learned IR Code (first HEX number will always be zero)."

Does this get you any further? Hope so...

You're right, the frequency info isn't there. Can you do a couple more debug captures of the same button please, but at further distances? Try backing up an inch from the previous position each time.

From the Pronto code you posted, this remote should be giving out a carrier frequency in the 40KHz range.

However, from the IR debug I see that the USB-UIRT is not able to detect any carrier from the remote.
