Jon,
thanks for the reply and great support!!!!

although the theory sounds good.. it never happens while the system is in use. you would think that if the external emmiters are causing the issue, then when activated they would cause the hang. but in my situation it only seems to happen after an extended period of no activity. ie. when i wake up in the morning. nothing works. but if i shut the system off (tv, stereo - leave pc on) and come back say 3 or 4 hours later.. still works. only seems to happen after 6-8 + hours of no activity.. almost like it goes to sleep.. and then just never wakes up. i turned on my red led, to see if the device stil has power and see's a signal. and it does.. press the remote and the light blinks on the usb-uirt. but for some reason it then doesnt send that info to the computer.

i'll continue to trouble shoot and provide you with as much info as i can.

BTW: can you tell me what Software you're using. Also about how old your USB-UIRT is?

Hi Jon,

For me this also happens after a few hours - I would say between 4-8 hours. Usually I will turn off my TV for the night, and when I wake up and turn it on again the UIRT stops working (although it still blinks when it sees an IR signal).

Thanks,
Bryan

The theory about the emitters actually *doesn't* have anything to do with when the emitters are actually in use. Instead it has to do with electro-magnetic interference conducted INTO the USB-UIRT by the external emitter cable (which is like a huge antenna). So, for example, the emitters routed near a TV or Amp with a large power supply might (theoretically) cause grief when the devices are powered up or down, etc.

Once again, its only a theory.

Some things you can try (besides disconnecting the emitters before you go to bed) to try and isolate the problem are:

1. Try plugging the USB-UIRt into a different USB port,
2. If you have one handy, try pluggin the USB-UIRt into a powered hub.

strange....
for the last 3 days everything has been working fine.. i'm almost afraid to reboot the computer.. but what has me thinking, is the temp. have been dropping here. is EMI affected in any way like static electricity is?
does temp, humidity or atmosphere have any bearing on EMI?

if so that may explain why it's now working ok... dunno. it's gonna warm back up next week. we'll see if it starts to flake out then :)

I don't see how temp could affect it, but you never know!

Jon,

I just wanted to let you know, i was running v1.2 of the driver. I installed v1.3 and it's been 8 days so far with no problems.. (knock on wood)
i didnt see any change log from 1.2 to 1.3, the web site has only what was improved from 1.1 - i'm just curious what could have changed from 1.2 to 1.3 and was causing the uirt to lock up all the time?

thanks!!!

I cannot really comment on the changes in the driver. The low-level USB driver (which is what you changed) is provided by the USB chip manufacturer and I am not privy to its internals...

14 days with out a single problem, or USB-uirt stop responding..
i feel confident in saying that upgrading from 1.2 to 1.3 of the driver solved my problem.
However i have not rebooted in 14 days. I'm going to run windows update tonight and get the latest patches.. which will require a reboot..
i'll cross my fingers and report back in a few days
:)
