half my codes suddenly don't work anymore

Postby Paul Forgey » Sun Nov 28, 2004 3:04 am

I've been successfully running Meedio Housebot + USBUIRT for a while, including discrete Pronto codes found on Remote Central. This morning, suddenly none of my discrete codes work anymore for any of my devices, and a handful of various codes for my devices that I learned no longer function. Most of my learned codes either quit working, work now after being re-learned, or just don't work even after re-learning them.

I've tried reinstalling the software, rebooting the machine and temporarily unplugging the usbuirt from the computer to reset it.

Since I was going through a distribution block, I unplugged it from that and tried holding the usbuirt in front of my various devices' remote targets with the exact same results. The same codes which didn't work through the distribution block (remember they did work yesterday) still don't work with direct line of sight, and same for the remaining codes which still work.

Is it possible my USBUIRT has a hardware failure?

There is possibly a hardware failure, although this sounds very odd.

I would suggest arranging for a replacement. Contact support@usbuirt.com

Since we've found out that it wasn't the hardware and lrnhelper was working, I thought the problem was the HouseBot plug-in.

However, lrnhelper is now failing the same way. It seems there's an intermittence somewhere in the drivers or API.

Any other ideas?

...so if you paste a Pronto code into LrnHelper which was working before, it no longer works on transmit???

SOVLED! Realizing that maybe the rs-232 usb adapters in addition to my mouse and keyboard may be draining the power from the motherboard's usb power rail (I wasn't running with a hub), I tried putting it on it's own powered usb hub and that seems to have solved it.

In hindsight, I feel rather silly for not trying that in the first place.

Unfortunately, this problem appears to be becoming more and more prevalent :(

I am starting to believe that the USB power supplies in PC's are getting cheaper and cheaper...
