USB-UIRT windows driver installation fails

Postby EverLAN » Fri Feb 25, 2005 4:56 pm

I'm having some difficulty getting the Windows drivers for the USB-UIRT device to install correctly.

In a nutshell, my living-room HTPC briefly had a USB-UIRT device connected and the drivers installed correctly. When I connect a different USB-UIRT device, rather than Windows using the already installed drivers, the New Hardware Found Wizard launches but fails with the error message "The system cannot find the file specified".

I'm trying to understand (a) why Windows needs to re-install the driver for a device that it already knows about and (b) why the driver installation is failing or at least how to get the drivers properly installed.

I wasn't sure if I could post JPG's in a message here, so I tossed up a quick web-page with some screenshots and the exact procedure I used at:

If anyone knows why the driver installaion is failing or can help, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

EverLAN

EverLan,

We have seen two other user in the past see this same problem. According to Microsoft, it is an obscure bug in the USB plug-n-play which may occur after an USB install has gone sour.

Please see the posting at the bottom of this page:

Thanks for digging up that thread for me, Jon. I read it over and decided to try a couple of other things before going down that road. Even though I'm fairly technical I didn't feel 100% comfortable with deleting a bunch of PNF files that I really don't know much about. I know I could have just renamed them, etc. but there were quite a few PNF files and all things considered it looked like Mr. Allebrandi had quite a time getting all his USB devices working. It drives me batty when things go from bad to worse. :?

Anyway I had a System Restore point from the first time I installed the USB-UIRT drivers (Feb 13) and not much had really changed on the PC since then so I decided to give that a whirl first. Lo and behold it worked!! The next step in my plan is to back away slowly while holding my breath.. LOL :D

Also, on a non-related note... somehow I got ahold of an old (2.0) Girder plugin for the USB-UIRT which didn't help but I think I have it all sorted out now.

Thanks for your quick response, Jon. I'm going to keep that thread handy.. just in case.
